Regulation key to high standards in Zim’s aviation sector

Efficient regulation, monitoring and management of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) has been cited as a key enabler for the maintenance of high standards in the aviation sector.

This came out during a familiarisation tour of the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe by the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development at the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport this Monday.

High on the agenda was the issue of compliance with international best practice.

CAAZ’s board chairperson, Ms Mankosi Ncube said, “You would appreciate that the entity itself is a highly regulated area and as a result, we have our mother body, which is the International Civil Aviation Organisation that gives us the regulations on how to run an efficient aviation industry. Therefore, we are subject to audits and that is how they check the issue of compliancy.”

“We visited the surveillance system radar and the portfolio committee was interested in how it operates in terms of coverage in the country. We also visited communications equipment, explaining how it operates making sure Zimbabwe is connected and the control centre where the airspace within the country is controlled to ensure safety of operations,” said CAAZ’s director general, Mr Elijah Chingosho.

Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development’s chairperson, Honourable Knowledge Kaitano is satisfied with the improvement and modernisation of the country’s aviation operating systems.

“We have seen that CAAZ has improved its equipment that also ensure that the safety and security of our skies in Zimbabwe is enhanced. We are happy that in that respect, CAAZ has done a good job to improve, modernise and digitise most of the operations.”

Findings from the portfolio committee will be tabled in parliament as part of efforts to improve the safety and security of aviation systems in the country.
