Coal mining giant, Hwange Colliery Company (HCCL) has set its sights on significant growth after a strategic partnership with the recently established Dinson Iron and Steel Company (Disco) in Chivhu.

Disco, a subsidiary of Chinese conglomerate Tsingshan Holding Group, is poised to become Africa’s largest integrated steel plant.

The massive undertaking presents a golden opportunity for HCCL, a major supplier of coking coal, a key resource in steel production.

HCCL confirmed the better days that lie ahead.

“We see the coming of the Manhize Steel Plant as an opportunity, where as a company we need to participate. We are also going to produce coke which will be a key ingredient in the steel industry.

“To us, we see the incoming of Dinson Steel Plant as the coming of a strategic partner for life. Our mining planning team are planning our pits in response to market dynamics. We have the resources so we will be able to supply what Manhize needs,” said HCCL’s chief executive officer, Mr William Gambiza.

The coal producer, whose production is hovering at around four million tonnes annually is exploring more markets for its products.

HCCL’s commercial manager, Ms Debra Malandu said, “We have a ready market, we have some clients who have confirmed off take. We are very excited about the developments that are taking place.”

The increased demand for coal is also positive news for Zimbabwe’s economy.

A thriving coal sub-sector translates to more jobs, foreign currency generation and overall industrial activity.
