Kunzvi Dam expected to provide clean water to Harare by year-end

Story by Tarirai Madhuyu

THE Second Republic’s efforts to provide clean water to the City of Harare and surrounding areas are proving successful, with the construction of Kunzvi Dam nearing 50% completion.

The dam is expected to be finished by the end of the year. During a visit to Kunzvi Dam in Goromonzi on Thursday, it was observed that construction is proceeding according to schedule.

Resident Engineer Davison Madondo revealed that the project aims to provide clean water to nearby areas such as Juru, Musami, St James, Chikwaka, and the City of Harare by year-end.

“The project started in 2022 and we are now at 47 percent completion. It is very critical that fuel, cement and explosives are available in time before the rain season. There is also a need to resettle many people downstream and along the dam wall.

“Reburial arrangements for 17 graves is underway while 64 households are to be urgently relocated and they will benefit from the irrigation programme,” said Engineer Madondo.

Construction work has commenced on the water pipeline to Harare with at least 10km having been cleared, while excavation of the treatment plant is underway.

The Kunzvi Dam will provide water for domestic use and agriculture purposes to the local community.

More than 150 local youths have been employed, and the community is also benefitting through selling various wares, food, and agricultural produce.

The Second Republic has constructed several dams such as Machekeranwa in Marondera and Marovanyati in Buhera, while the Gwayi Shangani Lake is also currently under construction.
