THE Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) has launched a nationwide campaign to identify and close unregistered tourism facilities across the country, including Airbnbs and short-term rentals. The initiative forms part of the government’s effort to regularise the tourism sector and ensure compliance with national regulations.
All operators have been issued registration notices, and non-compliance will result in the closure of their establishments. In a bid to encourage adherence, the government has reduced license and registration fees, making it easier for operators to formalise their businesses.
The campaign has already led to facility closures across the country, including Masvingo, Gweru, Marondera, Bulawayo, Chinhoyi, Mutare, and Harare. Four additional unregistered operators in Harare were also shut down today, signalling the ZTA’s commitment to enforcing standards and protecting the tourism environment.
The ZTA is encouraging whistleblowers to report unregistered facilities, aiming to foster collaboration in maintaining a legally compliant and safe tourism landscape.
Officials say the blitz will not only enhance compliance but also strengthen Zimbabwe’s reputation as a premier travel destination, providing safe, legally registered facilities for tourists and locals alike.
