ZRP intensifies road safety blitz ahead of Heroes and Defence Forces holidays

THE Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has declared war on errant drivers before, during, and after the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.

ZRP Commissioner General Stephen Mutamba has assured the public of their safety as the holidays draw closer.

“As the nation celebrates the forthcoming Heroes and Defence Forces Holidays, my office calls upon all Zimbabweans to observe peace throughout the period in order to assist in the maintenance of law and order. In this regard, the ZRP has deployed police officers to conduct roadblocks, stop and search blitz, patrols and awareness campaigns throughout the country,” he said.

“May I urge vehicle owners to be law-abiding citizens by observing road rules and regulations to curb road accidents. The recent Seke road accident in Chitungwiza is a clarion call for vehicle safety to be prioritised through regular servicing and maintenance. No vehicle should be driven on the roads with mechanical defects. The ZRP will therefore impound all unroadworthy vehicles for the safety of Zimbabweans.”

Meanwhile, the driver of the truck, which was involved in a road traffic accident which killed 17 people at Manyame Bridge in Chitungwiza last month, is facing charges of culpable homicide.

Desire Madiriko appeared at the Chitungwiza magistrate court this Friday and was remanded in custody to August 21.

“We can confirm that the suspect appeared in court facing culpable homicide charges. So far, we understand that two victims who were injured on the day are in critical condition,” National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi stated.

The Manyame Bridge accident claimed 17 lives, including two pedestrians.
