THE second edition of the ZITS Handball Tournament has set the wheels in motion for the revival of the sport across Zimbabwe.
The national event drew participation from teams representing various provinces, highlighting growing interest and commitment to the development of handball.
Beyond promoting competitive sport, the tournament also served as a platform to raise awareness on the dangers of drug and substance abuse among youths.
“ZITS handball tournament is there to provide entertainment and we are saying no to drugs as youths nowadays entertainment themselves by taking dangerous drugs,” tournament organiser, Sifu Shingirirai said.
Bulawayo Handball Chairperson, Taurai Ngwenya, commended the initiative and underscored the role of sport in shaping the future of young people.
“Our plan is to get the ball rolling in the development of handball, while also encouraging youths to engage in constructive activities such as sport, and staying away from drugs and substance abuse,” he said.
Among the institutions represented at the tournament were the University of Zimbabwe’s Wildcats, the National University of Science and Technology (NUST), Midlands State University (MSU), and Sirene.
Organisers and stakeholders hailed the event as a significant step towards rebuilding the handball community and promoting a drug-free youth culture.
