Zimbabwean short film ‘Kare Kare Kwazvo’ selected for preservation in Switzerland

Story by Farai Gwaze

ZIMBABWEAN short musical film titled: “Kare Kare Zvako” has been selected for preservation in one of the world’s top film archives in Switzerland.

Set in ancient times, “Kare Kare Kwazvo” tells the story of a woman’s struggles to take care of her family during a time of famine.

Co-producer of the film Olaf Koschke highlighted the significance of the film, which was produced in 2004.

“Kare kare kwazvo was done in 2004 and it was quite significant because it was the first Zimbabwean film made not by development aid funding, but with cultural funding.

“The film was selected for two reasons, in Zimbabwean cinematic history it was important to have a Zimbabwean film that had an innovative style of story-telling and several elements of community theatre and other authentic Zimbabwean elements to tell the story of the film and the other reason was its very innovative technical approach.”

Director of the International Images Film Festival for Women, Eresiana Hwede emphasised the importance of authenticity in storytelling.

“I think this is very significant to Zimbabwean filmmaking because you need to be authentic when telling your story.”

With its selection for preservation, “Kare Kare Kwazvo” will be safeguarded for future generations, serving as a testament to Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage and innovative filmmaking spirit.
