TEAM Zimbabwe has increased its medal tally to 10 at the African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola, following a silver medal performance by cyclist Rohnan Nicholson on Saturday.
Nicholson delivered a strong ride in the individual time trial, finishing in 17 minutes 20.45 seconds, just seven seconds behind the gold medallist.
Zimbabwe also added medals in athletics and swimming. In the pool, Alexis Johnson claimed her second bronze medal after finishing third in the girls’ 200 metres freestyle. Tariro William secured bronze in the girls’ 100 metres hurdles.
In golf, Zimbabwe’s Miriam Masiya maintained her dominance in the girls’ 54-hole stroke play event, extending her lead to 11 shots ahead of the final round scheduled for Sunday.
The boys’ golf team also remains in medal contention, sitting in a podium position and trailing leaders Namibia by three shots going into the final round.
The African Youth Games serve as a qualification pathway for the 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games, adding significance to Zimbabwe’s strong showing across multiple disciplines.
Officials say the results reflect the country’s growing competitiveness in youth sport, particularly in cycling and golf, as Team Zimbabwe continues to post positive results at the continental event.
The official opening ceremony of the Games is scheduled for Saturday evening, with competition set to continue in the coming days.
