Zim remains top international destination for tourists

Story by Tichaona Kurewa

An international travel magazine, The Travel, has endorsed Victoria Falls as a beautiful and must-visit destination, with the world wonder being the only destination in Africa that made it onto the list.

The Canadian publication recently named Victoria Falls as the number ten must-visit destination globally, saying, “When looking at this heavenly natural wonder, it’s difficult to believe that it even exists on this planet. The flowing clouds of water spray can be seen from miles away. The enormous Victoria Falls has a width of almost two kilometres and a height of over one hundred meters.”

Tourists from Germany, Netherlands, Denmark and the United States who were in Victoria Falls this Tuesday gave credence to the publication’s assertions.

“This is the most beautiful place I have ever seen,” of the tourists told the ZBC News.

Another said, “There is no place like this, the experience, everyone must visit this place.”

“Vic Falls is beautiful, we are loving it,” added another visitor.

‘We are Victoria Falls’ Coordinator Ms Shelley Cox also summed up why Victoria Falls is a must-visit destination.

“We absolutely agree that Victoria Falls is one of the world’s most natural beauties and it is officially recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage and one of the seven natural wonders of the world. Formed along the Zambezi River, a life force to the entire region along which it stretches, Victoria Falls provides habitat to a wealth of biodiversity and is part of the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area… one of the largest Transfrontier conservation areas in the world. So its prominence is not just its beauty but its global significance of its immensity of the biodiversity it offers within Southern Africa,” she said.

The tourism sector is currently contributing about US$1.9 billion to Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product and efforts are underway to attain a US$5 billion tourism industry by 2025.

To reap maximum benefits from the recent development, synergies between tourism players and government will be key in improving service delivery, attracting more direct flights into the country and intensifying the marketing of Destination Zimbabwe ahead of other regional attractions.

The travel and tourism sector contributed 4.1 percent to Zimbabwe’s Gross Domestic Product in 2020, translating to more than US$620 million.
