The United States of America has once again been caught offside, with analysts saying its continued meddling in Zimbabwe’s internal affairs is uncalled for.
The embassy’s Twitter handle has several messages on Zimbabwe’s forthcoming general elections, including encouraging people to go and register to vote.
That stance has however been described by political analysts as tantamount to political interference and something not part of a foreign mission’s mandate.
Political analyst Gibson Nyikadzino told the ZBC News, “This is uncalled for and not part of a foreign mission’s mandate. We have several missions in Zimbabwe and US stands out in terms of maintaining a keen interest in the country’s political affairs. Zimbabwe has foreign missions in many countries including the US, but meddling is not part of the briefing these missions get from the Zimbabwean government.”
This is not the first time that America has been accused of meddling in other nations’ internal affairs and analysts view this as a bullying tactic aimed at effecting regime change.
“The US Embassy in Zimbabwe is urging Zimbabweans to register to vote and vote for change. Whereas this might sound nothing, it shows a sense of meddling in the politics of sovereign states,” noted another analyst, Alex Manyonga.
Zimbabwe is set to hold general elections in August this year and foreign missions keen on observing the polls go through an accreditation process, which is yet to commence.
