HARARE-THE Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC) has applauded the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) for demonstrating notable commitment to upholding and promoting human rights within its operations.
Addressing the media in Harare this Monday, ZHRC Chairperson Ms Jessie Majome commended the ZPCS for its responsiveness to human rights concerns and praised its innovative Family Week initiative, introduced to promote inmate well-being through family support.
“The Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission is encouraged by the positive developments that followed our recent monitoring mission. Several concerns were addressed promptly by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service,” she said.
Ms Majome further cited the release of 94 detainees from prolonged pre-trial detention as a commendable step in line with the Constitution.
The ZHRC also hailed the Family Week programme, introduced two years ago by ZPCS, which allows inmates to reconnect with their families in a humane and supportive environment.
“We were extremely pleased to witness the innovation called Family Week. Some of the detainees were not available during our visit because they were with their families. We commend ZPCS for this progressive initiative that recognises the importance of family bonds in rehabilitation,”
The Commission acknowledged ZPCS’s growing culture of openness and willingness to engage with human rights institutions as a positive shift in custodial reform.
