THE Zimbabwe Boxing Federation is using the third national championships to prepare athletes for the African Union Sport Council (AUSC) Region V games slated for Windhoek, Namibia from the 4th of July.

Fireworks are expected at the third national boxing championship set for Redcliff on the 24th of this month.

The championship is expected to be a preparatory platform for boxers ahead of AUSC Region V games set for Namibia this July.

“I missed going to Serbia for the junior championship but nonetheless i have put in some serious preparation for the Kwekwe tournament,” a participant said.

“At this moment in time i can fight anyone. I have polished my short comings and i am ready to conquer,” a boxer said.

“It is my first competition. I feel nervous but I have confidence in the training I got here,” a participant said.

The Zimbabwe Boxing Federation says keeping boxers in the ring will ensure the athletes remain in shape ahead of international assignments.

“We have taken a deliberate approach of staging more tournaments so that our boxers remain in shape. We have done two national championships in Hwange and Zvishavane and we are using the Kwekwe one to prepare our boxers for the region v. We want to win not to add numbers,” Technical Official – Zimbabwe Boxing Federation Steven Masiyambumbi said.

Boxing is among several other sport codes which will take centre stage at the AUSC Region Five games in Namibia in July.
