ZIMBABWE’s Warriors begin their Africa Cup of Nations Group B campaign tonight with a daunting assignment against seven-time continental champions Egypt at Stade Adrar in Agadir, Morocco.
The fixture marks the 14th meeting between the two nations, with history firmly favouring the Pharaohs. Egypt have won eight of the previous encounters, drawn four and lost only once, underlining the scale of the challenge facing the Warriors as they seek a positive start to their tournament.
Egypt have also dominated the rivalry on the AFCON stage. The sides last met at the finals in 2004 and 2019, with Egypt emerging victorious on both occasions.
In Tunisia in 2004, Zimbabwe made an encouraging debut when Peter Ndlovu scored their first-ever AFCON goal to take an early lead, but Egypt recovered through Tamer Abdel Hamid and Mohamed Barakat to secure a 2-1 win. Fifteen years later, the Pharaohs edged a tight Group A contest 1-0 in Cairo.
For Zimbabwe, tonight’s match forms part of their sixth appearance at the AFCON finals. The Warriors have played 15 matches at the tournament, recording three wins, two draws and 10 defeats, and remain in search of a breakthrough beyond the group stages.
While the statistics underline Egypt’s pedigree and experience, Zimbabwe will be hoping to defy history and lay down an early marker in a group that also includes South Africa and Angola. A disciplined performance and composure in key moments will be crucial if the Warriors are to revive hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds.
Kick-off is scheduled for 10pm CAT and the match will be broadcast live on ZBC TV.
