Warriors coach unveiled

Story by Lawrence Trusida, Sports Editor

New Warriors coach Micheal Nees has been unveiled in Harare this Thursday ahead of the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers.

After arriving in Zimbabwe this Wednesday, Nees was formally unveiled as the new Warriors coach at an over-subscribed media briefing in Harare this Thursday.

The 57-year-old German will kick-start his tenure with a date against Kenya on the 4th of September at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda before hosting Cameroon at the same venue five days later.

With less than two weeks to go before the two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are played, the coach is pressed for time but relishes the challenge.

“Ideally we would love more time but then again there is no time in national teams it’s not like club football but all the same I am ready for the challenge and I am ready to start and I would want to put my philosophy on the team which is to control the game and dominate play I believe Zimbabwe has food players I have been scouting them and saw that we are good enough to compete and achieve our potential,” said ZIFA Normalisation Committee Chairperson, Lincoln Mutasa.

The Zimbabwe Football Association Normalisation Committee highlighted that the coach’s history saw them luring him to Zimbabwe.

“He has been successful before and he looks like a coach who is up for the challenge so we had no hesitation in appointing him and we believe he will steer the country in a new direction,” he added.

Nees has been given a two-year contract with a mandate to ensure the Warriors qualify for AFCON 2025 as well as build a team for the future.

ZIFA are still to name his assistants but indicated they will work in consultation with the new coach, adding the backroom staff will be made up of locals.
