Walter Mzembi to return to High Court over US$2 million tv donation case

Story by Peter Chivhima

FORMER Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi is expected back at the High Court this Tuesday to explain why he donated LED television sets to three churches and private organisations without the approval of the treasury.

Mzembi, through his legal team, approached the High Court on 3 February and filed an application for discharge at the close of the State’s case.

He argued that the State had failed to establish a case against him after accusing the former cabinet minister of criminal abuse of office involving LED television sets.

High Court Judge, Justice Benjamin Chikowero, however, dismissed the application, saying Mzembi has a case to answer.

In dismissing the application, Justice Chikowero said by donating the LED television sets without the Treasury’s approval, Mzembi acted unlawfully and must answer to the charges.

According to the State, the total prejudice amounts to US$2 million.

The LED television sets were meant for 40 fan parks to promote tourism during the 2010 FIFA World Cup hosted by South Africa.
