Player market heats up as well-funded teams transform Zimbabwe PSL

THE arrival of financially stable clubs in Zimbabwe’s top flight has heightened competition for elite players ahead of the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season.
For years, inadequate financial backing constrained the domestic game. However, the entry of ambitious, well-resourced teams has begun to reshape the landscape, injecting fresh investment and raising expectations across the league.
Newcomers and emerging forces such as Scottland, Hardrock, Simba Bhora and FC Platinum have intensified the race for top talent, while the resurgence of traditional giants CAPS United and Chicken Inn is restoring prestige and competitiveness to the competition.
Defending champions Scottland set the tone last season by combining strong financial backing with on-field performance to clinch the title, redefining perceptions of what is achievable in the local game.
Football administrator Gift Banda said the improved financial environment is already lifting standards.
“It is a breath of fresh air. The entry of Scottland and we need to give credit to benefactor Scott Sakupwanya for bringing life into the league, has raised the bar,” he said.
“Quality players will go to financially stable teams. We are seeing added value to the league where teams compete in remuneration packages. We all envisage a well-run PSL with more money in it, which will lead to better quality football and more spectators coming into the stadiums.”
He added that sponsorship deals for clubs such as Highlanders and Dynamos signal a more competitive campaign ahead.
“With teams like Highlanders and Dynamos now sponsored, we think we are going to have a good season and the football bar will be raised,” Banda said.
Football analyst Bukhosi Mpofu said increased investment from private financiers would spread quality across the league.
“The cash injection that most angel financiers are putting into the sport is something we should appreciate as a sport-loving nation because it places teams in better positions to sign quality players,” he said.
“If several teams are doing that, it means the financial cake for better players is shared by various clubs. Better days are indeed ahead. We may even see an influx of foreign players coming on board.”
