A NEW chapter in student accommodation has opened in Chinhoyi, with Varsity Heights introducing a modern, technology-driven residential experience that sharply departs from the country’s long-standing tradition of cramped hostels and limited amenities.

Located a short distance from the Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) campus, the US$8.8 million facility is offering learners a contemporary home away from home, equipped with advanced security systems, leisure spaces and conveniences aligned to global standards.

Inside the multi-storey complex, students enjoy leisure rooms fitted with modern entertainment equipment, dedicated spaces for reflection, including a prayer room and enhanced security through biometric entry points that ensure only authorised residents can access the building.

“The upgraded security system has changed how we live here. With the biometric access, we no longer worry about random people entering the building or things going missing from our rooms. It creates a controlled environment where you feel safe walking in at night or leaving your belongings behind,” a student, Obnature Muponda said.

Another resident, Chidochashe Chifamba, highlighted the improved sense of safety: “The biometric security has been a huge relief for me, especially as a female student. In other hostels, you always worry about strangers walking in, theft, or your personal safety. But here, knowing that only registered residents can enter makes me feel protected and comfortable. It is one of the main reasons I feel safe living here.”

One of the most popular additions is the token-operated laundry room, allowing students to wash and dry clothes at their convenience.

“This place has completely changed my student experience. The token laundry system is my favourite feature because I can wash and dry clothes at any time without long queues or weather worries. It really makes the accommodation feel like a proper home away from home,” Muponda noted.

Varsity Heights Property Manager, Mr Aldrich Muchipiso, said the project reflects a bold new direction in student accommodation in Zimbabwe.

“Varsity Heights is designed to meet today’s student needs. The modern face of this property places it among the best accommodation facilities in the country. We want students to feel safe, comfortable, and supported as they pursue their studies,” he said.

The facility accommodates 384 students and is owned 80.33% by the Public Service Pension Fund.

The development was delivered through a consortium of partners including First Mutual Life, First Mutual Health, Deloitte Pension Funds, First Mutual Properties, Nicoz Diamond Insurance, Acol Chemicals Pension Funds and the Local Authorities Pension Fund.

As government intensifies calls for stronger public–private partnerships to boost national infrastructure, Varsity Heights now stands as a flagship example of what well-coordinated investment can deliver.
