THE government and development partners have availed a US$2 million fund aimed at creating sustainable creative enterprises in Zimbabwe at the Creative Economy launch held in Harare this Wednesday.
The Creative Economy Week is expected to promote cultural exchange and create sustainable enterprises for creatives through a number of initiatives set for Harare and Bulawayo.
“So collectively we are putting in over US$2 million for four years to work together to enhance, enable and create platforms across the creative industries,” Regional Director Africa Region British Council, Lucy Pearson said.
“We created with artists, in Zimbabwe. So again, through capacity skills, making connections because we do not have the comport to actually have all the answers.
Local artists are set to benefit from the Music Connects Africa initiative that promotes local creative works beyond the borders, with Tahle Wedzinza having been signed.
“Through Music Connects Africa, we are going to support the first programme that was inducted just last month. A cohort of 15 music creators that are going to be supported through master classes, grants to fund their projects and enterprises, access to digital distribution and marketing, live music festival showcases, radio and TV playlisting, and more,” Music Connect Africa representative, Keith Kuhudzai said.
“We are excited about partnering with industry experts from Shear Publishing. And they are going to be delivering the master classes and offering opportunities for our artists.
The government is committed to creating a conducive environment for creatives to grow.
“Creative enterprise grows across various sectors, including fashion, music, literature, visual arts, and fashion. As a ministry, we are looking forward to the output from the thought-provoking discussions that will unfold during the industry-limited procession, where business and industry leaders share valuable insights on the impact of the creative economy across Zimbabwe,” the Acting Chief Director in the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Dr Biggie Samwanda said.
Spearheaded by the British Council and Switzerland Embassy, the week-long conference will feature discussions, workshops and fashion shows, among other engagements.
