EMERGING forces FC Platinum and Simba Bhora will clash for this year’s Uhuru Cup when the country celebrates 45 years of independence at Nembudziya Grounds in Gokwe on April 18.
As part of the Second Republic’s thrust to decentralise national events, the Uhuru Cup will be played in the Midlands Province for the first time in its 44-year history.
The top two teams from last year, champions Simba Bhora and runners-up FC Platinum will clash for the Uhuru Cup this year.
The two clubs are emerging forces within the domestic football circles, with FC Platinum having won four titles in the last six years, while Simba Bhora are the defending PSL champions.
In a Post Cabinet Media Briefing in Harare this Tuesday, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere announced the exciting development.
“Simba Bhora and FC Platinum football clubs will entertain the crowds during the main Independence Day anniversary celebrations, while Herentals Queens and Black Rhinos Football Clubs will play as the first and second-placed teams in the Premier League during the 2025 Children’s Party celebrations.”
Just like what happened in Mt Darwin and Murambinda when the independence celebrations were hosted there, Nembudziya will also have legacy projects, with a football pitch and other amenities set to be constructed.
“Preparatory works are all at an advanced stage and progressing well, with the construction of legacy projects in full swing at the Main Arena at Gokwe North Open Grounds, the Gala site at Nembudziya Government High School, and the venue of the Children’s Party at Nyamuroro High School.”
Football action will start on April 17, at the Children’s Party where defending Women’s Premier Soccer League side Herentals Queens clash with rivals Black Rhinos who finished second in the league last year.
This year’s Independence celebrations are running under the theme: “Zim@ 45: Devolve and Develop Together towards Vision 2030.”
