THE Surajkund International Crafts Mela currently underway in India has placed the spotlight on the growing role of digital platforms in transforming trade within the global arts and crafts sector.

The 2026 edition of the festival is showcasing the use of digital payment systems, including India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI), as a tool for improving market access, cross-border trade and connectivity among artisans from different countries.

Exhibitors say digital inclusion is increasingly critical, particularly for artisans from remote communities who often lack access to formal markets.

“Most people exhibiting here come from outlying areas with limited internet access, so equipping them with digital skills is essential,” an Indian exhibitor said. “Digital inclusion empowers communities and supports the growth of local economies.”

Zimbabwean artists and crafters attending the fair say the experience aligns with Zimbabwe’s broader digital transformation agenda and offers lessons on expanding market reach through technology.

Zimbabwean crafter Gracious Libombo said the widespread use of UPI at the fair has highlighted the importance of adapting to digital payment systems.

“Most people here, especially locals, rely on UPI,” Libombo said. “At times, customers walk away because they do not carry cash, which shows how critical digital payments are for sales.”

Other African participants have also expressed interest in adopting similar platforms to enhance trade and brand visibility.

“This application does not only improve brand exposure, but it also helps exhibitors increase sales,” said Malawian artist Lawrence Daka.

The 39th edition of the Surajkund International Crafts Mela, which runs until February 15, is focusing on promoting ease of doing business through digital integration, reinforcing the role of technology in strengthening cultural trade and creative economies.
