Southern region log leaders gun for glory

Story by Mthokozisi Dube

SOUTHERN Region Division One log leaders, Arenel are one foot in the Premier Soccer League as they need nine points from right matches to secure promotion.

After assuming the pole in week eight, Arenel have not looked back.

On the verge of glory, the log leaders are not taking anything for granted to avoid a repeat of last season which saw them surrender the race to Hwange.

Affectionately known as the Sweet Boys, Arenel ran amok, beating Mosi Rovers 6-1 to confirm their title credentials.

They need 9 points from their remaining eight games to gain promotion into the top flight.

Arenel’s head coach, Kudzai Mhandire is praying for consistency in homestretch.

“We assumed pole position during week 8 and it has been a journey, but we are happy the boys are now motivated themselves. It’s no longer about us pushing them. They have since discovered that it’s now within reach,” said Mhandire.

Club captain, Zibusiso Dambo is aware of what happened last season when the Sweet Boys dropped crucial points at a crucial stage of the race for promotion.

Dambo said, “We have been consistent and everyone is now slowly feeling the reality hence we are now motivated. Last year we dropped crucial points during the better part of the campaign.

With some premier league experience, midfielder, Simon Munawa is confident of securing promotion.

“When I joined this team, I wanted to help these young stars to gain promotion and I am happy we are one foot in. The majority of these young stars have not played premier league football. So, it’s a big opportunity for them,” he said.

In the central region, the race for the sole ticket to the PSL may be headed for a photo finish as TelOne are leading Tongogara by four points, with the two sides set to tussle it out on the last day of the season.

In the Northern Region, Black Mambas are enjoying a six-point lead over second-placed former premiership side, Harare City.

In the Eastern Region, FC Wangu Mazodze have a comfortable nine-point lead over second-placed Bikita Minerals.
