ZIMBABWE’S campaign for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2027–2028 term has gained fresh momentum after Serbia formally endorsed Harare’s candidature.
Elections for the non-permanent seats will be held in mid-2026 in New York, where Zimbabwe will require at least 128 votes, a two-thirds majority in a secret ballot, even in the absence of competing candidates.
Zimbabwe’s bid has already drawn support from several countries in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union.
Serbia became the latest to join the growing list of backers when its Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Rasida Grujic, met the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at Munhumutapa Offices in Harare on Thursday.
“We are proud to support Zimbabwe’s candidacy for the United Nations Security Council non-permanent seat for 2027-28. Zimbabwe has already demonstrated capacity within the United Nations Multilateral Forum and the Security Council, having served twice before. By supporting Zimbabwe, we believe it will continue to uphold international principles, the United Nations Charter and international law, working for global peace and conflict resolution through dialogue,” ambassador Grujic
He added that Serbia believed Zimbabwe would continue to uphold the principles of the UN Charter and international law, while working for global peace and conflict resolution through dialogue.
“Zimbabwe did a great job during its SADC presidency, helping to stabilise the region and encouraging dialogue among conflicting parties. I congratulate His Excellency President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa,” he said.
If successful, Zimbabwe will serve on the UNSC from 2027 to 2028, its third tenure on the organ responsible for maintaining international peace and security. The country previously held non-permanent seats in 1983-1984 and 1991-1992.
Meanwhile, this Friday Zimbabwe joined Kenya in marking Nairobi’s 62nd Independence Day celebrations.
Kenyan Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Gertrude Angote, together with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Professor Amon Murwira, celebrated the deepening relations between Harare and Nairobi under the Bi-National Commission.
“Our cooperation is guided by the Joint Permanent Commission on Cooperation, which has produced 16 MoUs and has since been elevated to a Bi-National Commission at Summit level. High-level exchanges between our Heads of State and Ministers have advanced collaboration across trade, defence, education, people-to-people and business-to-business relations. Kenya remains committed to facilitating travel, tourism, and economic integration in Africa. This is why we introduced the Electronic Travel Authorisation exemption for almost all African countries, making it easier and faster for visitors, including Zimbabweans, to travel to Kenya,” she said.
Professor Murwira highlighted the importance of African unity in addressing shared challenges.
“As we confront climate change, youth unemployment and global economic volatility, the answer lies in African solutions and African unity.
Zimbabwe stands ready to work closely with Kenya to address these emerging challenges. We appreciate Kenya’s leadership at continental level, including support during Zimbabwe’s SADC Chairmanship and efforts to resolve the conflict in eastern DRC. We also commend President Ruto’s leadership of the AU Reform Agenda, which is essential for modernising the Union and strengthening its institutions. We commit to further deepening these relations for the mutual benefit of our two countries and peoples,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Kenya enjoy strong bilateral ties and share common aspirations for peace, democracy and sustainable development.
