MEMBERS of the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church converged in Highlands, Harare, this Sunday for a 10 and five kilometre fun run aimed at promoting healthy living in communities, amid rising concern over drug and substance abuse.
The event attracted both the young and the elderly and also served as part of activities lined up for the 35th anniversary celebrations of the Lighthouse Ensemble, set for next month.
Lighthouse Ensemble Director, Mr Nsandula Sinchuke, said the fun run reflects the church’s ongoing crusade to promote healthy lifestyles in support of government efforts to curb social ills.
“As Adventists, we believe that a healthy community guarantees a productive workforce that contributes to national development. This maiden fun run will now be held annually as a reminder of the importance of exercise and healthy eating, which ultimately reduces the burden on the health delivery system,” he said.
Over the years, the Lighthouse Ensemble has contributed to national development by producing leaders who have excelled in various sectors of the economy. Among its members are Dr. K.R. Tagwirei, advisor to the President of Zimbabwe; Mr. Obey Chimuka, CEO of Fossil Contracting; Elder Nqobile Magwizi, President of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA); and Elder Shepherd Fungura, CEO of ZB Bank.
The SDA Church says it will continue to partner government in fostering community health, wellness and national development.
