A 40-year-old truck driver has been sentenced to an effective two-year prison term by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol along the Harare-Mutare Highway.

Patrick Tumo was arrested by police at a roadblock on the Harare-Mutare Road on June 16 after officers observed unusual behaviour while he was behind the wheel of a truck.

Police escorted Tumo to a police station, where a breathalyser test was conducted. Investigations subsequently established that he had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was charged under Section 55 of the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 13:11) and was sentenced to an effective two years in prison by the Rusape Magistrates’ Court.

The conviction comes as authorities continue to raise concern over the dangers of drunk driving, which remains one of the leading causes of fatal road traffic accidents.

Law enforcement agencies have urged motorists to act responsibly and comply with road safety regulations to help reduce accidents on the country’s roads.
