GOVERNMENT is intensifying efforts to combat drug and substance abuse in Mashonaland West Province, with plans underway to establish a provincial rehabilitation centre in Makonde District.
The facility, earmarked for Portlet, is expected to become a key component of the province’s response to the growing challenge of drug and substance abuse.
Authorities say resource mobilisation efforts are at an advanced stage to transform Portlet Hall into a fully-fledged rehabilitation centre offering treatment, counselling, rehabilitation and reintegration services for affected individuals.
The project forms part of broader Government efforts to strengthen prevention, treatment and recovery programmes across the province.
“The province received ZiG 4.3 million from Treasury for drug and substance abuse-related programmes, including awareness campaigns. The province has also mobilised over US$50 000 towards the renovation and expansion of Portlet Hall into a rehabilitation centre,” Director for Coordination in the Office of the Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Mr Temproast Musemwa said.
Government has also enhanced mental health support services through the deployment of specialised personnel to health institutions across the province.
“Government has deployed psychologists, social workers, occupational therapists and rehabilitation technicians to provide specialised services,” Mashonaland West Provincial Medical Director, Dr Celestino Dhege said.
Authorities say youth empowerment remains central to efforts aimed at preventing drug and substance abuse, with vocational training programmes being expanded to provide young people with skills and economic opportunities.
“We are capacitating existing vocational training centres so that youths are occupied and empowered with skills. Three new vocational training centres will be established in Mhangura, Kariba and Sanyati to ensure total coverage,” Mashonaland West Administrative Officer in the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Development and Vocational Training, Mr Liven Mutokosi said.
The developments were highlighted during a week-long drug and substance abuse awareness campaign held in Kadoma, which brought together Government departments, community leaders, youths and other stakeholders to discuss prevention, rehabilitation and reintegration strategies.
The planned rehabilitation centre is expected to strengthen the province’s capacity to provide support and recovery services while complementing ongoing awareness and youth empowerment initiatives.
