AN inmate serving a 45-year prison sentence at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison has been re-arrested following a dramatic escape attempt at the Harare Magistrates Court Tuesday morning.

The inmate, identified as 33-year-old Itai Madhongo, was brought before the court on a separate matter when the incident occurred.

According to preliminary reports, Madhongo allegedly stabbed a Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officer during the court appearance before stealing the officer’s uniform and attempting to disguise himself in a bid to escape.

The incident triggered a temporary shutdown of the Harare Magistrates Court as security officials swiftly launched a manhunt within the premises.

Madhongo was later apprehended while hiding inside the court complex before he could make his way out of the building.

The injured ZPCS officer was attended to, while authorities moved quickly to restore order at the court.

Police and prison authorities have since launched investigations to establish the full circumstances surrounding the escape attempt and the security breach.
