President Mnangagwa mourns two national figures: Archbishop Mwazha and Justice Chatukuta

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa has issued messages of condolence following the deaths of African Apostolic Church founder, Archbishop Paul Mwazha, and Supreme Court judge Justice Felicia Chatukuta, describing both as distinguished figures who served the nation with devotion.

Archbishop Mwazha, who died last week and has since been declared a national hero, was hailed by the President as one of Zimbabwe’s most respected spiritual leaders. He noted that the Archbishop’s influence spanned more than six decades, characterised by teachings that encouraged faith, discipline, unity and good citizenship.

The President said the decision to confer national hero status on Archbishop Mwazha reflects Government’s recognition of his profound contribution to Zimbabwean society and his impact on millions of followers at home and abroad.

The President also said government saw it befitting to confer national hero status on Archbishop Mwazha in recognition of his contribution to the Zimbabwean society, with his teachings emphasising obedience and good citizenship.

Turning to the passing of Justice Chatukuta, President Mnangagwa described her as a jurist of “unquestionable dedication,” whose commitment to upholding the rule of law was evident throughout her career. He traced her professional journey from graduating with a law degree from the University of Zimbabwe in 1985, to serving in various legal roles before her appointment as a High Court judge, where she served for 16 years. She was promoted to the Supreme Court bench in 2021.

In honour of her service, President Mnangagwa has directed that Justice Chatukuta be accorded a state-assisted funeral.
