Defending Paramount Garments U20 Rugby League Champions Pitbulls have kicked off their title defence in style after thumping the Zambezi Steelers 45-10 at Old Georgians Sports Club this Saturday.
With the tussles on the field of play, the lively crowd got a chance to enjoy beautiful grassroots rugby, as traditional powerhouses Pitbulls picked up from last year’s tempo as they eye retaining their crown.

Pitbulls were shaky in the first period, as the Zambezi Steelers went toe to toe with them in the headline match of the season opener, much to the delight of revelers who thronged the Sports Club in their numbers.
Sables player Edmore Sigauke told the ZBC News, “It’s enjoyable to see the rugby Community back together, but obviously it’s a bit hard now being outside. Just as much game time as possible is always good leading up even to the boss trophy. So, all the boys out here as you would know, they’re working towards playing for the national team this year. So I think the preparation comes in playing as much as you can going out there on the field for extras for, you know, your practice session.”
Former U20 and Sables player, Benoni Nhekairo says the platform is crucial as it enables young players to get into the elite level of the sport.

“There’s I would say 100 500 people plus here. The Vibes are there. People are smiling. You know I spoke to a bit of the boys, everyone happy you know, happy that they finally get to play again after such a lot break. Most of these guys, you know, they’ve been putting in the work, and, you know, now I guess it’s time to show off their skills, you know, coaches are up there watching and, you know, it’s good to get that game time, you know.”
The Pitbulls kicked off the campaign with a convincing 45-10 victory over the Steelers.
The defending champions showcased their tenacity fighting off first half woes to beat the Zambezi Steelers and kick-off the campaign on a perfect note.
