THE Nkayi Soccer Academy Tournament concluded this Sunday, marking a successful three-day showcase of football talent in Nkayi.
Launched in 2023 to nurture young players in Matabeleland North, the tournament has quickly established itself as a key platform for developing football skills in the region. This year’s edition attracted thirteen teams from outside the province, reflecting growing interest in the initiative.
“We started this journey in 2023 and we are happy to note it is a life-changing program. We do not have division one football in Nkayi, but we want to create a platform where these players are integrated into teams because there is a lot of talent here,” Nkayi Youth Tournament Spokesperson, Mhawukelwa Sibanda said.
Academy Director Never Sibindi highlighted the challenges posed by the absence of a functional junior league.
”We do not have an operational league, so we have been travelling across to have our boys in action. The coming in of these teams has given us an opportunity to fine-tune our boys,” he added.
Football legend Madinda Ndlovu implored football teams to cast the net wider and have scouts in remote areas.
“There is abundant talent here. Football clubs should go back and do the right thing, give these players a chance,” he stated.
In competition results, Bosso secured the Under-17 title with a 3-0 victory over Nkayi Academy, while Sibanye emerged winners in the ladies’ category following a round-robin series. Nkayi continues to be represented at the national level by its sole Division One team, Nkayi United, based in Bulawayo.
