Festive season drug and alcohol abuse campaign rolled out nationwide

Story by Wellington Makonese

THE National Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse has launched a nationwide festive season awareness campaign, with a focus on curbing drug and alcohol abuse. As part of the initiative, law enforcement agencies are deploying breathalysers to deter drunk driving, aiming to protect public health and reduce substance-related incidents on the roads during the high-risk holiday period.

The initiative seeks to promote responsible behaviour, protect public health and reduce incidents of substance-related harm, particularly on the roads.

The committee brings together key government ministries, law enforcement agencies, health institutions, civil society and community stakeholders to ensure a coordinated national response.

This enhanced approach is expected to significantly reduce road carnage commonly associated with the festive season.

Today, some areas where such awareness and enforcement exercise are underway include Skyline, Nyabira, Domboshava and Goromonzi among others targeting motorists and the general public.
