New Mashala Clinic to expand healthcare access in Hwange

A new primary healthcare facility in Hwange District is expected to open by mid-year, strengthening access to medical services in Matabeleland North Province as Zimbabwe advances its universal health coverage targets.

The Mashala Clinic project is being implemented through a partnership involving Government, the Hwange Rural District Council, and the local community. Authorities say the facility will reduce the distances residents travel to access healthcare in Mwemba and Hwange Town, where existing centres have long served surrounding rural communities.

For years, villagers have faced significant transport costs and delays in seeking treatment, particularly during emergencies. Pregnant women, children and elderly residents have been among the most affected by the lack of a nearby health facility.

One resident described the clinic as a long-awaited intervention.

“We have been travelling several kilometres to Mwemba and Hwange Town to access medical services. We truly appreciate this development. Having health services at our doorstep will improve life expectancy. For pregnant mothers, this is lifesaving. It will ease the burden of travelling long distances, protecting both mother and child, and will help eliminate home deliveries,” the resident said.

Traditional leadership has also highlighted the facility’s strategic location within the community.

Chief Hwange, Mr Amos Chipaya, said the clinic’s proximity to schools and churches would improve accessibility.

“Once completed, the clinic will be centrally located near a primary school, a secondary school and several churches, making it convenient for everyone to access health services. We urge those responsible for construction to expedite the remaining works so that the community can begin to benefit,” he said.

The facility is designed to include male and female wards, a pharmacy, an antenatal unit, consultation rooms, treatment rooms and waiting areas. Officials say the clinic will provide comprehensive primary healthcare services, including maternal and child health support.

The Mashala Clinic forms part of broader efforts to expand rural health infrastructure and decentralise essential services, reducing pressure on urban facilities while improving outcomes in underserved communities.
