ZIMBABWE will be playing for pride when they face the South Africa national cricket team in their final Super Eight fixture of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup this Sunday in Delhi, aiming to conclude their campaign on a positive note despite being out of semi-final contention.
The Zimbabwe national cricket team head into the encounter determined to win following heavy defeats to the India national cricket team and the West Indies cricket team, results that brought their hopes of progression to an end.
Despite those setbacks, Zimbabwe’s campaign has not been without merit. An impressive group-stage run rekindled belief among supporters and demonstrated the side’s growing competitiveness on the global stage.
Cricket analyst Dean du Plessis believes conditions in Delhi could provide Zimbabwe with a more favourable platform against a formidable South African outfit.
“The pitch in Delhi is expected to be slower than the surfaces encountered in Mumbai and Chennai, which could bring Zimbabwe more into the contest. While it may not necessarily make them favourites, it could narrow the gap and produce a more competitive match. On a slower surface, the inclusion of an additional spinner such as Graeme Cremer, or even Wellington Masakadza as a genuine spin option alongside Sikandar Raza, would be a sound tactical move. That said, South Africa are equally well equipped for such conditions, with the likes of Keshav Maharaj and George Linde offering both control and depth,” he said.
While South Africa go into the fixture as favourites, Zimbabwe will be eager to deliver a disciplined and spirited performance. A strong showing against one of the tournament’s leading sides would provide a fitting conclusion to a campaign that, despite falling short of the semi-finals, has offered encouraging signs for the future.
