Story by Tafara Chikumira

Stakeholders say the recently-launched Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) policies will give the much needed direction for the country to align with new trends in technology advancement.

This Thursday, President Emmerson Mnangagwa launched three ICT policy documents in a major milestone set to provide the necessary direction on the future of the country in the new Communication world.

These are, the National ICT policy, the National Broadband plan and the Smart Zimbabwe Masterplan.

Government says the country should brace for a revolution in the ICT sector as the policy documents come into effect.

The Minister of Information Communication Technologies and Courier Services, Honourable Tatenda Mavetera, said, “The policies aim to accelerate broadband penetration, reduce the cost of access, foster innovation and entrepreneurship, and enable smart solutions in various domains such as education, health, agriculture, mining, and tourism. The policies are expected to promote digital transformation towards the attainment of Vision 2030, which envisions Zimbabwe as a high-income economy driven by innovation.”

Stakeholders are now anticipating a boom in the ICT sector following the launch of the policy documents.

Said a resident of Somabhula, the Midlands province, “It’s a huge milestone in our country. This shows that the Second Republic is geared to see the country being part of the global village…”

“What we witnessed today is a testimony that our President is a visionary leader who walks the talk as far as the future of this country is concerned. All we need to do is to support his vision,” another added.

The world has seen a massive transformation in the world of ICTs over the years with Zimbabwe angling to be part of the global village through the installation of Infrastructure for increased internet penetration.
