CASTLE Lager Premier Soccer League side MWOS have played down concerns over key departures, expressing confidence that the club can sustain its upward trajectory ahead of the new season.
The Norton-based outfit were one of last season’s standout performers, finishing second in their debut top-flight campaign and quickly establishing themselves as genuine title contenders.
That achievement was built on a well-balanced squad that combined emerging talent with experienced campaigners, allowing MWOS to compete consistently across the season. However, the club has since lost three influential players, goalkeeper Martin Mapisa, midfielder Abubakar Moffat and winger Nigel Matinha, raising questions about their ability to maintain momentum.
Head coach Lloyd Mutasa remains unfazed, insisting that squad turnover is a natural part of the game and an opportunity for renewal rather than a setback.
MWOS have already begun reshaping their squad, securing the services of goalkeeper Tedious Baye from Manica Diamonds as Mapisa’s replacement. The club has also completed the permanent signing of forward Billy Veremu from Simba Bhora after an impressive loan spell that produced 13 goals and eight assists last season.
Speaking on the club’s official website, Mutasa said departures often open the door for new talent to emerge.
“Some players’ careers start when others leave. Last season, we gave players like Nigel Matinha a chance and they showcased their talent before moving on. I once said the same when we took in players like Devon Chafa and Thomas Magorimbo, they were unknowns, but with good support, they became stars. We expect the same from the current crop.”
With continuity on the technical bench and a refreshed squad, MWOS believe they are well-positioned to remain competitive and demonstrate that last season’s performance was no coincidence.
The club opens its new PSL campaign away to newly promoted Hunters on the first day of the season.
