AT least 200 pupils from Great Dyke Primary School have received stationery from the Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Honourable Marian Chombo in a move meant to capacitate disadvantaged rural communities.
The stationery comprising of writing books, pens, covers and sanitary wear for girls has brought hope to 200 disadvantaged pupils in Zvimba North who were facing a lack of learning materials.
“We are a school located in a mining compound where the majority of learners are struggling to pay school fees and afford learning materials. We are also grateful that the Minister has also promised to hand over textbooks for the learners,” Great Dyke Primary School, Teacher, Ms Abigail Nsingo said.
“We want to thank our Minister because we were using one book for all subjects so this is a positive development for us,” a pupil said.
“As young girls, we are struggling to afford sanitary wear which among other issues was driving girls away from school,” a female pupil said.
Honourable Chombo spoke on the need for a collective effort in capacitating disadvantaged learners.
“We need to promote a whole government and society approach in responding to our community needs. We have handed over books to 200 learners and in due course we are going to avail textbooks so that we close the resources gap being faced by the majority of rural schools,” Honourable Chombo said.
Meanwhile, the government, through devolution funds is transforming rural schools through the procurement of learning materials and the building of classrooms aimed at improving the quality of education.
