Story by Oleen Ndori
MAURITIUS has raised a cyclone warning alert to the maximum after Cyclone Belal brought torrential rain and flooding to the Indian Ocean island nation.
The country’s meteorological service says the storm is now moving away eastwards, but warned that other environmental risks still exist.
Reports indicate that one person has been killed, while thousands have been left without power along with heavily flooded streets.
The International Federation of Red Cross Africa says more than one thousand people have been evacuated and about 8,400 people in Mauritius are without power.
Cyclone Belal has already hit nearby Reunion, leaving at least one person dead.
