ZIMBABWE had a slow start to the 2025 African Youth Games after table tennis sensation Professor Matsika went down 3-1 to a Rwanda opponent in the singles competition in Luanda, Angola on Wednesday.

After a tough 3-1 loss to Rwanda in his singles opener, Matsika walked over his opponent from the DRC, propelling him to the round of 16.

The 16-year-old is looking to make the most of the second chance.

“I’m feeling good, I learned from my last game, and I’m ready to take on the best. I’m confident I can go all the way and use this chance again,” he said.

Matsika’s compatriot, Tatenda Timire, faced a tougher challenge in the girls’ pool, losing 3-1 to Rwanda and 3-0 to Kenya.

Despite the setbacks, Timire now hopes to fight for international ranking points.

Action continues this Thursday with the cycling competition kicking off with the boys’ road race before the Team Time Trial event.

The quartet of Rohnan Nicholson, Matthew Hildebrand, John Goddard, and Diego de Noronha will represent the country in the race.
