MOROCCO’S hopes of becoming the first African nation to reach two FIFA World Cup semi-finals were dashed after a 2-0 defeat to France in the quarter-finals on Thursday.
The Atlas Lions were seeking a second World Cup semi-final appearance but saw their impressive campaign come to an end against the former world champions.
Morocco frustrated France for much of the first half, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou producing a superb penalty save to deny Kylian Mbappé and keep the scores level.
France emerged stronger after the break and eventually made the breakthrough, with Mbappé redeeming himself by scoring before providing the assist for Ousmane Dembélé, whose clinical finish sealed a 2-0 victory.
The current Moroccan side was unable to replicate the historic achievement of Walid Regragui, who guided the Atlas Lions to the World Cup semi-finals in Qatar four years ago.
France will now face the winners of Friday’s quarter-final between Spain and Belgium.
European champions Spain will rely on their possession-based style and attacking quality, while Belgium will be aiming to keep their World Cup hopes alive in one of the tournament’s standout fixtures.
