ZANU PF leadership in Matabeleland North has declared its support for the proposed Constitutional Amendment (No. 3) Bill of 2026, describing it as a vehicle for policy continuity and infrastructure consolidation in one of Zimbabwe’s strategic provinces.

At a series of party engagements, provincial officials framed the proposed amendment as central to sustaining development momentum, particularly in energy generation, border trade and transport infrastructure. Matabeleland North borders both Botswana and Zambia and hosts several flagship national projects.

“We welcome the proposed Amendment Bill as it gives more time for parliamentarians and the President to execute various developmental projects. The fact that Parliament will be voting for the President will also bring peace among the electorate, as there will be less electioneering and political sloganeering. We have witnessed unprecedented development in Binga, including the opening of the Binga Border Post, which has lessened the burden of travelling through the Victoria Falls Border Post. The Technical College is also another development in Binga, which makes us support this amendment,” he said.

ZANU PF Hwange District Coordinating Committee Chairperson, Cde Mathew Muleya, said extending the presidential term would ensure the completion of ongoing flagship projects.

“The constitutional amendment is very important for us as we have seen a lot of good work the President is doing, which we feel he must continue. The extension of the presidential term will give the President and his team more time to work on developing the country and completing key infrastructure projects. There are a lot of projects going on in Victoria Falls, such as the construction of hotels and lodges, a cricket stadium, as well as the Batoka Gorge Hydro Electric Scheme. The President needs to finish these,” he said.

Central Committee Member for Lupane, Cde Mail Nkomo, also highlighted key developments underway in the province.

“We are witnessing unprecedented development in the province. The Gwayi-Shangani Dam is under construction, and there is ongoing rehabilitation of the Bulawayo-Victoria Falls Road. We now have a passport office and a teachers’ college in Hwange. We want to give the President more time to enhance and complete these projects. We support Amendment Bill No. 3,” he said.

Matabeleland North Provincial Chairperson, Cde Richard Moyo, said the Bill emanates from party resolutions adopted at national Resolution Number 1 adopted by the people of Zimbabwe through ZANU PF party structures at conferences held in Mutare in 2024 and 2025.

“As Members of Parliament and provincial leaders, our structures are ready to advance it. Communities across Zimbabwe can see the visible infrastructure development undertaken by the President. Here in Matabeleland North, we have the Gwayi-Shangani Dam, road rehabilitation projects, clinics, and upgrades at our Provincial Hospital. Because of this progress, the people of Matabeleland North support the proposal for the President to extend his term to 2030,” he said.

Provincial leadership maintains that the proposed amendment will provide continuity and stability, enabling the completion of transformative projects already underway across the region.
