Malawian legislators impressed by Zimbabwe’s empowerment thrust for women

Story by Regis Mhako

FEMALE legislators from Malawi have applauded Zimbabwe for adopting the women’s quota system in Parliament which has resulted in their counterparts taking up more leadership positions.

The legislators who were in Mhangura this Friday have since pledged to lobby for the adoption of the system back home.

They also made an undertaking to come up with systems that promote the advancement of women.

Mhangura legislator, Honourable Precious Masango, who hosted the visiting legislators in her constituency called on families and communities to be gender sensitive and empower women.

The exchange programme has been facilitated by Oxfam, with the idea of building capacity for female legislators.

“This is a return visit following a visit to Malawi by our local MPs last year in October. So we also facilitated a return visit and the aim is to build the capacity of female legislators who are equally capable as their male counterparts,” said Mr Cleto Manjova the head of programmes at Oxfarm.

The visit took the legislators to Arcadia Farm and the only boarding school in the Mhangura constituency deep in a farming community, which are both owned by women.
