Leaked pipe floods Town House basement

Story by Theophilus Chuma

DISASTER looms at the Harare City Council headquarters, the Town House, amid shocking revelations of a leaked pipe that has flooded the basement of the building.

According to sources, the challenge was detected in January and since then, the water levels have significantly risen to affect the whole basement.

The situation has forced some employees to be relocated, while electricity has been switched off by the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority over fears of a potential electrical disaster.

Images show part of the affected basement with the rest of the underground area inaccessible.

Harare Residents Trust Executive Director, Mr Precious Shumba said,” This is a potential crisis. The building is hanging on thin ice and could eventually collapse. This is worrying, and it appears the authorities do not care about the unveiling situation. With so much water, the effect on the building is insurmountable.”

Some employees at Town House say the situation is a disaster, noting other challenges such as poor workspaces and dilapidated ablution facilities at Town House among a plethora of challenges facing the city fathers.

Director of Water for Harare City Council, Engineer Mabhena Moyo said,” I am not sure about the situation, I only heard about it yesterday on social media and I will be going there to find out.”

The answer is a sharp contrast to the prevailing situation, the accumulated water speaks a different story.
