From the heart of Chinotimba, a high-density suburb in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, a musical sensation is taking the nation by storm.
Kweseka Band is making waves with their energetic performances and infectious melodies. The band’s name, “Kweseka,” perfectly captures their spirit – meaning “drifting ahead” in the local Lubale language.
Formed in 2013, the eight-member ensemble has steadily climbed the music ladder, captivating audiences with their unique blend of traditional Zimbabwean rhythms, dubbed Afro Mbongo – a vibrant fusion of diverse cultural influences found in Victoria Falls.
Drummer, Simon Masendeke said, “We actually create songs from Tonga, Nambya, and we also fuse the instruments that they have to make music close and identifiable with these cultures. The dream is to build a legacy for the young ones doing music or the upcoming ones, showing them that they should not lose the dream. People have to push until you get to where you want to be. We promise we are going to inspire someone out there.”
Keyboard, drum, congas, lead guitar, bass guitar, and keyboards are some of the instruments played by the band while clad in traditional Makisi attire.
The band’s dedication and talent have not gone unnoticed.
Their musical prowess recently propelled them to victory at the prestigious Chibuku Road to Fame 2024 competition, securing the coveted top spot and a recording contract to reach a wider audience.
The band has also toured countries such as the Netherlands and Belgium.
“We are grateful for winning the Chibuku Road to Fame competition. This win has secured us a recording deal, which we are incredibly excited about. We are also looking forward to touring various places and countries. We are eager to collaborate with talented musicians across Zimbabwe. Our music is deeply inspired by our traditions and cultures, which is also reflected in our band’s distinctive dress code,” said band member, Ginavivian Mwanza.
Beyond their musical talents, Kweseka Band members are also committed to using their platform to promote positive messages and social change.
Their lyrics often explore themes of love, unity and the importance of preserving cultural heritage.
As Kweseka Band continues to “drift ahead,” their music promises to leave an indelible mark on the Zimbabwean music scene and beyond.
With the talent, dedication and unwavering spirit, the band is poised to become a global force in the world of Afro-fusion music.
