KWEKWE-THE Kwekwe Africa Day Golf Tournament lived up to expectations this Sunday, with more than 100 golfers from across the country converging at the Kwekwe Golf Club in a celebration of unity, sport, and African heritage.

Held annually to commemorate Africa Day, the prestigious event honours the vision of the continent’s founding fathers and continues to draw participants from various backgrounds, including young golfers, seasoned professionals, and female competitors.

Speaking during the tournament, Captain of the Kwekwe Golf Club, Mr Isheunesu Dube, expressed delight at the increased participation, particularly among the youth.

“It is quite amazing to see golfers converging together to support such initiatives. In the past, it was not easy to attract such numbers. I am particularly happy to realise that part of the golfers are over 30 young people who have already shown some great signs of improvement in their play. Our goal is to make sure that we improve the sport, and already the signs are good,” he said.

Stakeholders from the corporate sector also echoed their commitment to the development of golf in Zimbabwe.

“What we witnessed today is a sign that we are moving in the right direction. The growth of any sport requires the coming together of corporates, and the level of support we witnessed in hosting this tournament is amazing to say the least. We are very confident that the future of the sport is bright,” Managing Director – Innocraft Engineering, Mr Clifford Makiwa said.

The inclusive nature of the tournament was also highlighted, with increased female participation noted.

“It is quite amazing to work with people who are so enthusiastic about sport. We are very happy that a number of female golfers also participated in the tournament and emerged as winners. It shows the sport is getting popular by the day,” Manager – Dream Inn, Ms Nothando Majoni said.

This year’s tournament feeds into the broader vision of unifying golf structures in the country, with members from the ZGA, ZPGA, and ZLGA participating in the event a true reflection of the inclusive development strategy being championed in the sport.
