Inside the Seke midnight raid that left a community in fear

Story by Pavel Makona
A quiet night in Marimbi Village, Seke District, turned into a scene of terror when a nine-member armed gang descended on the Makanyire family home, leaving behind fear, trauma, and a shaken community.
It was just after midnight on April 16 when the stillness was broken.
Inside the house, the family slept, unaware that danger was already circling outside. But for Mr Wonder Makanyire, a flicker on a CCTV screen would change everything.
“We were asleep when I noticed something strange and checked the CCTV. That is when I saw nine men moving around the yard, some carrying iron bars and guns, breaking windows and doors, forcing their way into the house, demanding cash, and they started assaulting the other family members and me,” Mr Wonder Makanyire said.
What followed was swift and brutal.
The gang smashed their way in, shattering windows and doors with calculated force. Within moments, the home was no longer a place of safety, but a battleground.
“They broke in and immediately turned violent and struck my husband on the forehead with an iron bar before they dragged him into the bedroom, demanding money and tied him together with the maid and kids,” Mrs Makanyire said.
Under the dim glow of household lights, the attackers moved methodically, demanding cash and valuables while unleashing violence on anyone in their path. The family, overpowered and terrified, could do little but comply.
The intruders ransacked the house, making off with cash, mobile phones, wedding rings and even CCTV footage, erasing traces of their presence as they vanished into the night.
By dawn, the homestead bore the scars of the attack, broken glass, splintered doors and a family struggling to process the ordeal.
Beyond the Makanyire household, the shock has rippled through Marimbi Village, where residents now live on edge, haunted by the thought that the attackers could strike again.
Community members say sleep has become a luxury.
“We are afraid and cannot sleep because of the fear of even the slightest of noises. You begin to think that those men have returned, as a community, we have thought of setting up a neighbourhood watch to limit this vice,” Ms Beatrice Makururu said.
The unease is shared widely, with residents now considering collective measures to protect themselves.
“We are thinking of putting measures to reduce alerts each time, as this is not a first-time thing,” Mr Kudzai Matamba said.
For some, the fear has already altered daily life.
“We are living in fear after the incident, and we are sleeping together with kids,” Ms Idzai Taruvona said.
Police have since confirmed the arrest of one female suspect in connection with the robbery, while a manhunt for the remaining suspects is underway.
As investigations continue, one thing is clear: for the Makanyire family and their neighbours, the echoes of that violent midnight raid are far from over.
