The visiting Director General of the International Labor (ILO) Mr Gilbert Houngbo has toured the Geo Pomona Waste to Energy Project to assess Zimbabwe’s iconic waste management project.
The ILO Director General is the latest high-profile figure to visit the GeoPomona Waste to Energy project in Harare after European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe, His Excellency Jobst Kirchmann, over a week ago.
Mr Houngbo, who is on a working visit to Zimbabwe was impressed by the level of development taking place in the country, including the GeoPomona Waste to Energy Project.
“I’m impressed by the level of development I have witnessed in this country. This project signifies the adoption of modern waste-to-energy management solutions in the country and it is for every developing country to copy and use in managing waste,” he said.
Giving the latest construction update, Geo Pomona Executive Director, Dr Dilesh Nguwaya disclosed that the sorting plant will be completed by January next year.
“We are completing the importation of equipment to finalise the construction of the sorting plant and this we expect to complete by the end of January.”
Several Southern African countries have shown interest in replicating the project in their own countries as a panacea to their waste management challenges.
