Award-winning Zimbabwean film ‘Nyanga’ which explores identity, culture and wildlife conservation is set to hit the big screens this December.

A masterpiece written and co-produced by Eddie Ndlovu which adds to the list of films that explore pride, culture and identity in the country will premiere in Harare on the 19th of this month.

Showcasing the surreal nature of Nyanga, the film was released in September.

“Nyanga explores the themes of identity, culture, and the subject of flight, an exploration of what it means to embrace one’s heritage. Nyanga is based during the time of COVID-19 lockdown and follows Panganae, a dedicated ranger, who loses his wife to the COVID-19 virus. Along with this team of rangers, they have to fight off poachers, who take advantage of the lockdown period. The principal photograph of the film was shot in Nyanga, Lake Ntuakwe, Redza, and Haka Kemba,” said Ndlovu.

Starring Collin Ncube, Benhildah Kandawasvika, Hardlife Makuku, Llyod Mazengula, Talent Nyamayedenga and Peter Chester, the film is attracting international acclaim after scooping several accolades.

“Nyanga has garnered significant recognition, winning 11 international awards, two selections, and two nominations across the world in different film festivals in Africa and Asia. This acclaim underscores the film’s impact on the quality of its storytelling and production value. These awards are a true testimony of how the story has impacted and created a conversation on the international level. I’m happy that Zimbabweans are going to have a chance to watch this film locally. The world premiere of Nyanda is scheduled for 19 December in the city,” he added.

The movie which first premiered at the Sotambe Zambia International Film Festival in September has so far received 11 awards including Best International Feature Film at the Thilsri International Film Festival of 2024 and Best Cinematography at Kodaikanal International Film Festival 2024.
