A 42-year-old Epworth man has been remanded in custody after appearing in court on charges of unlawful entry and theft involving cash and valuables worth more than US$17 000.

Lucky Dube is accused of breaking into the Damafalls home of Edwin Chivima last month and stealing cash, foreign currency and other valuables.

According to the State, the incident occurred at night when Chivima was awakened by unusual noises inside the house. Upon investigating, he allegedly found Dube inside the property, but the suspect escaped before he could be apprehended.

The court heard that Chivima later discovered that cash amounting to US$12 000, 20 000 South African rand, 3 000 Botswana pula and several cellphones had been stolen.

The total value of the stolen property is estimated at more than US$17 000.

Police reportedly made a breakthrough in the case on May 6 after receiving information linking Dube to a series of robberies in greater Harare.

During investigations, Dube allegedly led detectives to the recovery of some of the stolen cellphones, which were positively identified by the complainant.

He also implicated an accomplice identified only as Chris, who is still at large.

Dube was remanded in custody and is expected to return to court on May 26.
