Harare Magistrate to deliver ruling on pitbull owner’s bail application

Story by Fungai Jachi

A Harare magistrate is set to deliver a ruling on the bail application filed by Mike Mapinga, a Harare man whose three pit bulls and a rottweiler attacked and killed a passerby, Samuel Machara, in Bluffhill last month.

Mapinga faces culpable homicide charges.

According to the State, Mapinga allegedly acted negligently by leaving his unmuzzled dogs unsupervised in the yard of his rented property, which had only a low brick-and-mortar perimeter wall.

It is alleged that after releasing the dogs into the yard, Mapinga went into his bedroom, leaving them unattended.

The dogs reportedly scaled the wall and attacked Machara, who was walking nearby.

He sustained severe injuries to his neck, hands, legs and stomach, ultimately leading to his death.

The incident sparked a social media debate about whether pit bulls should be banned in the country.
