Harare City Queens edge Kwekwe Queens in WPSL opener

KWEKWE Queens put up a spirited performance but were unfortunate to lose 2-1 to Harare City Queens at Callies Sports Club as the Women’s Premier Soccer League kicked off this Friday.

With both teams level on points before the match, the win gives Harare City Queens crucial breathing space from the relegation zone.

The intensity of the match showed that both teams gave it their all.

The hosts were out of the blocks early, but the Midlanders had answers.

In the 24th minute, City made their dominance count after Mitchel John cleverly nodded the ball into the back of the net to take a one-nil lead.

The goal spurred Kwekwe Queens into action, and 10 minutes later, they were back in the game after the hosts failed to deal with a long ball, and they went to the breather at one all.

The second half was an even contest before a beautiful free kick from Nyasha Munemo sealed the match as a contest, as Harare City Queens walked away with all the points.

Across town, former champions Black Rhinos Queens beat Black Mambas 2-0 to sort of resurrect their title ambitions.

Action continues this Saturday with a mouthwatering tie between Correctional Queens and Chapungu being the peak of the fixtures, Highlanders Queens battle defending champions Herentals Queens in Bulawayo.

A Manicaland derby will take centre stage in Rusape as Red Buffalo Queens host Faith Drive at Vhengere.

On Sunday, Shesham hosts Conduit Academy while Platinum Royals battle Cranborne at Gresham grounds.
