Gwanda Magistrates’ Court complex nears completion, set to strengthen justice delivery

GWANDA is set to enter a new era in justice delivery, with the main structure of the long-awaited Magistrates’ Court Complex now complete.

The project, which began in 2004, stalled in 2008 due to financial constraints before construction resumed in 2019 under the Second Republic. For years, Gwanda, the provincial capital, has relied on temporary and inadequate court facilities, limiting the efficient administration of justice.

Once completed, the modern judicial complex will house eight courtrooms and 25 offices for magistrates, prosecutors, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services, and the Zimbabwe Republic Police. It is also expected to accommodate more than 500 government employees and consolidate key justice institutions, including High Court services, under one roof.

Public Works Deputy Director Mr Martin Mukorovera said the project has reached an advanced stage.

“We are happy to report that the complex, which stalled for a long time, is finally moving towards completion. The majority of the works have been done and we have material on the ground to take the project to finality,” he said.

Beyond improving access to justice, the project has also transformed livelihoods in the area, creating employment opportunities for local residents since construction resumed.

“We are happy because we have learnt many skills since we started working here,” said one of the workers.

Another local resident said employment at the site had enabled parents to pay school fees, adding that the project had restored a sense of dignity and purpose within the community.

Upon completion, the complex will allow serious criminal cases, including murder and rape, to be heard locally. This is expected to significantly reduce case backlogs, minimise delays associated with travelling to other centres, and improve access to justice for communities across Matabeleland South.
